This book caught my eye because Kathy Reichs is also the author of the books which inspired Bones. She is a common household name for writing Bones, but not for her teen fiction which I think is a huge shame. At the start of the book we meet Tory Brennan, who is the niece of Temperance Brennan from the Bones series. She shares an interest with forensics, as Temperance does. Tory has just moved in with the father she never knew she had, after her mother is killed by a drunk driver. Her and her father live on an island, close to where his work is. There are three other teenagers, Shelton, Hi and Ben, who are the same age on the island and they soon become fast friends. But when they all fall ill and start to experience heightened senses, can they find what's happening and who seems to be following their every move?
I loved this book because Reichs knows the crime genre so well and transitions it beautifully to teen fiction. She translates the teen voice into the book effortlessly, I would believe it was written by a teen themselves. The characters are quirky and easy to relate to. The book has a fast tempo and will have you hooked by the end of the first page. There are currently three other books in the Virals series which continue on Tory's adventures. They link beautifully and each book in the series is as good as the last. I bought all of mine hardback so they cost £12 each but on kindle or paperback they will be much cheaper. Looking for crime, look no further!
